June 2010 Student of the Month

ImageBryan Bruce entered SIATech a few months ago. In those months, he has shown some of the greatest growth of any student who has entered my classroom. The first days of SIATech were hard for Bryan because he has a hard time adapting to new environments. He would sleep, sleep, and sleep some more in his various classes. Today, he has a relentless attitude and a new outlook on life.

Bryan did not have the easiest life growing up. Born in Orange County, he lived in the area for a few months before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada. For various reasons he moved back to California and attended a high school near Orange County. He struggled to stay motivated because of his family and their living arrangements. Often, Bryan and his family found themselves living homeless and living with friends and other family members. At that point, he did not really focus on his future because of his present situation. He was very fearful of living out on the streets, so the stress and constant thinking led him to misbehave and make wrong decisions with substances. He was suspended and let go from other schools, so he knew something was wrong and that he needed to change.

Enrolling and attending Job Corps was the step Bryan knew was going to change his life forever. Once there, he decided that he needed to complete a goal of earning his high school diploma, so he enrolled in SIATech. Bryan commented that the amount of help and motivation given to him by the highly trained staff here have given him hope and inspiration to become someone in life.

I asked Bryan about his SIATech experience and what stood out from it. He commented that his history class made a huge difference. In this class, he was able to understand and retain all the lessons given to him. The teacher made class interactive, positive, and a place where every student feels the ability to learn and succeed.

Bryan Bruce is an example of the many students in our SIATech program. Bryan is ready to graduate and earn his high school diploma. He wants to attend college. He is undecided on a major. We wish him the best and we are very proud of him.
