Substitute for job security? Yes, many

Houston area has boost in those wishing relief duty in schools

By Ericka Mellon, Houston Chronicle, January 27, 2009

Officially, Adria Berry is an attorney. She graduated law school in May, passed the bar exam in November, but now she spends most days teaching middle school in Cypress-Fairbanks.

Berry has sent more than 200 résumés seeking work as a lawyer, but after not landing a single interview, she has resorted to substitute teaching. With a mortgage and $120,000 in law school debts, the 28-year-old needs a paycheck above anything.
