Student Success Stories
June 2010 Student of the Month

ImageBryan Bruce entered SIATech a few months ago. In those months, he has shown some of the greatest growth of any student who has entered my classroom. The first days of SIATech were hard for Bryan because he has a hard time adapting to new environments. He would sleep, sleep, and sleep some more in his various classes. Today, he has a relentless attitude and a new outlook on life.

Bryan did not have the easiest life growing up. Born in Orange County, he lived in the area for a few months before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada. For various reasons he moved back to California and attended a high school near Orange County. He struggled to stay motivated because of his family and their living arrangements. Often, Bryan and his family found themselves living homeless and living with friends and other family members. At that point, he did not really focus on his future because of his present situation. He was very fearful of living out on the streets, so the stress and constant thinking led him to misbehave and make wrong decisions with substances. He was suspended and let go from other schools, so he knew something was wrong and that he needed to change.

Lying

By Jessica Lari, Student

Lying is like an addiction
But lying is as pointless as it gets
Lying is like a dance
You can keep dancing if you can keep up with the steps
Lying is as complicated as a game
Sometimes you just don’t know how to play
Lying is like a way to manipulate someone
Lying is as addicting as a drug
And sometimes I have to lie
But I hate being lied to.

Poem:

A conversation for one.

By Stephanie Tran, age 17

This world I live in is so small. Who are all these people who have surrounded me in these past four years?

Yeah, I don’t know either. Spare the ones I love most.

Which is not many.

Option A or Option B, pick one Stephanie, because it’s all you got.

I suppose at least there are choices.

In theory.

Taking Action
ImageThis month James Mustin was an example to our students. He worked relentlessly every period of class. His excellent work ethics and his positive persona made him stand out from a wonderful pool of students here at Long Beach SIATech High School. Like many of our students, James has a story that changed his life. It is a story that stands as a stepping stone for his future rather than an obstacle.
James grew up in Northern California. Early in his childhood, his family decided to move to Lancaster, California. He described himself as a great student who cared about his grades. It was until his parents decided to get a divorce that his life began to spiral out of control. After a few months, James and his mother decided to move to Carson, CA. It was then that life began to get tough on him and his family. He began to feel betrayed by life, so he began to use substances. During high school, his life began to take a path for the worst. His substance abuse got worse, and he began to hang around the wrong crowd. He describes this point as one of his worst times of his life. He had ninth grade credits as a senior in high school, so he was transferred into a continuation school. Instead of better outcomes, life began to get worse for James.

New Goals

ImageJesus Fabian came to Long Beach Job Corps in February 2009. In his previous school career, he was expelled from his school. He knew at that point that something needed to change in his life. He applied to high schools nearby his home, but they did not accept him because of his previous choices. After a few weeks, a friend told Jesus about Job Corps, and he applied to the program.

He was accepted into Job Corps a few weeks later. Right there and then he made goals for his new life. He knew he did not have many more chances after his past decisions, so he set goals to complete his trade and graduate high school at Long Beach Job Corps/SIATech.
